Yesterday the Croatian city of Split announced that it will close its zoo, commonly described by various animal welfare groups as “the worst zoo in the world”.
“We have told the zoo manager to start preparations & draft a program to relocate all animals,” Goran Kovacevic, the deputy Mayor, said.
The monkeys will be sent to Germany while a solution for a 14-year old tiger is “still being considered,” he said. So, good news for the primates but a little worrying for the big cat who may yet end-up as a tourist’s souvenir rug
The zoo site will be transformed into a recreational park with domestic animals, a kids’ playground & a botanic garden, Goran told reporters. So look out for stories of dead gerbils strewn across kiddies’ playground rides & miserable, overcrowded cats & dogs reduced to eating each other & the occasional outstretched petting-hand to start coming out of Split soon.
Politicians, bureaucrats & animals do not make a good mix, maybe we should suggest that they leave the animals outside the cages & keep the idiots in them, purely for their own safety, of course.
