Gerald and his twin-brother John had always dreamed of working in customer support and when the chance arrived to work for a major Japanese electronics company at their Indian call centre, they jumped at the chance. It was only after 2 weeks of 18 hour daily shifts that they both realised that they had made a terrible mistake; there are only so many times one can say “Have you tried turning it off and turning it on again?” before terminal ennui causes the brain to shut down completely.
In 1932 Mme Chloë Arnaud set out on her round the world trip accompanied by her chauffeur in an amphibious automobile designed by her husband. This photograph was taken as they were about to leave terra firma and embark on the sea-going part of their epic voyage, just down the coast from La Rochelle on France’s Atlantic coast. Never seen again they were deeply mourned by M. Arnaud for three months, after which he married his secretary; he never designed another vehicle, focusing instead on the family’s truffle business which he had worked in before his one attempt at automobile design.
‘Nuff said. Ho ho ho.
Jeremy was mortified at the damage his uncharacteristic temper-tantrum had caused, but with some paper, glue, a decent marker pen and a bagful of “can do” attitude he was confident that Susan wouldn’t notice anything amiss when she returned from her mother’s. He just had to pray that she wouldn’t notice the cats absence…
“When you come to think about it, what could possible go wrong?” was the last text message received from from passengers on-board the first London flight from the latest budget airline offering tickets for the less than the cost of an average latte at Starbucks.
There is an infinitely large gap between not succeeding and utter failure. The first teaches us self-pity and caution; 
the latter teaches us the true nature of both Hubris and its twin, Nemesis. The bitter lesson always learned just a little too late.
Sometimes there are things you have to do that are worse than shooting your own dog.
When he confessed that he had forgotten to bring the hurdles Johann thought that, as the “new guy”, maybe his boss would cut him a little slack. It turned out that the offer to allow him to “make good” on his foul-up wasn’t quite as generous or forgiving as it sounded.
