It was the glamor of this advert that suggested to Jos Slapper in 1911 his move into the world of rubbing and cosmetic lard from his existing bacon-based food business; Jos Slapper & Sons remained the world’s leading suppliers of recreational pig fat products until the outbreak of war in 1939 when their entire stock was requisitioned for use as artillery lubricants.
